Photograph a ring beyond its front face

Build a useful ring record with interior views, band width and a clearly explained measuring method.

Include the less visible surfaces

Photograph the ring from the front, side and rear, followed by an interior view in diffuse light. Keep the entire opening visible when possible. Deep shadows can conceal construction details while direct flash creates bright patches. Rotate the piece between frames instead of relying on a single dramatic image that leaves most of the surface unreadable. Keep the scale close to the opening so perspective does not make the ruler appear smaller.

Explain the measurement

If you include an internal diameter, show the ruler passing through the centre and state the unit. Record band width separately. Do not label an uncertain conversion as an official size: different sizing systems and rounding can disagree. A wide band can feel different from a narrow one with a similar opening, so measurements do not promise a particular fit.

Use a factual caption

Describe visible motifs, dimensions and condition without treating a familiar mark as authentication. Keep receipts, names and ownership documents outside the public image set. If a ring has been resized or repaired and you know that history, record it as context. The journal is an independent visual reference and does not certify an item or establish its current value.
